My Girlfriend and Google

Aug 26, 2016 -- Posted by : admin

While sitting watching the Game of Thrones the other day my girlfriend was on her phone searching for recipes for a cleanse we are on. She typed in “Gluten Free Recipes”, pointed her phone at me and asked “this top one means it’s the best result, right?" I had a quick chuckle and replied “You would hope so, but that’s not exactly how Google search results work.” As I was about to launch into an explanation about the mechanics of “Googling” something, it occurred to me that she is probably not alone in this erroneous way of thinking. So, given the nature of my business, I felt it was my obligation to write a little piece clearing things up.

As you likely know, when you search for a phrase in Google (also commonly referred to as “Googling”), a large number of results pop up. These include the organic results, paid listings, and Google places on the mini map. Ideally, Google wants the top results of your search accurate, but this is not always the case. “Why is this?” you may ask. Like many other things in life, it comes down to money. Companies that understand the importance of a vast and highly visible online presence as part of an overall digital marketing strategy invest large dollars in SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, management to help them appear in the top of the search results (click here for an article on SEO). This means that some national stores - even those far outside of your geographic region - can appear ahead of local companies in your Google search results. It doesn’t mean that they are the better choice, necessarily. It simply means they make better use of their marketing dollars, and very likely get more business.

Food for thought: Next time you do a Google search, remember the results are dictated by those companies with the money to get their websites to the top of your results list. Basic SEO elements will go a long way in the Oklahoma market.

And the dessert: If you are a business owner or marketing manager in Oklahoma, it’s helpful to know that this area is fairly dated in the realm of SEO and digital marketing. We are behind a good portion of the country, so exploring this option now would benefit you, as the competition is low. Watch for the next piece on making that investment to get in and get ahead of your local competitors.
